About the Artist: Stephanie Taylor

ArtWithLogo

Stephanie Taylor has a BA in history from UCLA, with an emphasis in economic philosophy, and a masters in sculpture from Sacramento State. She is a freelance Op-Ed contributor to the Sacramento Bee. She has just published a book about water in California: Water: More or Less, an anthology of art, essays and policy. Her co-author is Rita Schmidt Sudman, former executive director of the Water Education Foundation.

Responding with whatever materials are most suited to interpret the meaning of a place, from paint, steel, and cement to words, Taylor is driven by curiosity, location and audience. Taylor has been creating site-specific installations and paintings for 38 years, including over thirty large-scale mural and sculpture projects in the Sacramento region. Her work is in private and corporate collections from coast to coast, and in Kyoto and Paris.

In the Artists words...

"As a working studio artist, I’ve had the pleasure of only making art to make a living, which is a good thing, as that’s all I’ve ever wanted to do. My father’s genes on the business side, combined with my mother’s on the art side, have left

me with a pragmatic view – that I’m in the business of

selling myself as much as my art. That sounds a bit

weird, but by that I mean that I’m selling my ability to

not only create, but to deliver, on time and on budget.

I’ve always been fascinated with the role of scale in

architecture: how people relate to space, how the

move through space, inside and out.

I’m one of those artists who is more concerned with a

level of challenge and learning than I am in developing

a “collectible” style, or working with the same materials year after year. I thrive on a little risk, the feeling of starting a project not knowing exactly what to do or how to get it done, whether in words or images. It’s like the fun part of traveling — you never know what’s around the next bend."
